Pepperoni with a Twist

There is a new twist in the world of pepperoni and it offers pizza businesses a great way to grow sales while intriguing their customers to experience something new and delicious.

Think of pepperoni and you might immediately think of a cheese pizza topped with this No. 1 pizza topping. A growing trend has emerged in the shape of a pepperoni roll or twist that is tasty, fun and profitable.

The classic pepperoni roll first became popular in West Virginia.  Giuseppe “Joseph” Argiro at the Country Club Bakery in the town of Fairmont created it in 1927. They became an immediate hit with the local coal miners who would pop them in their mouths as nutritious snacks.

Today’s pepperoni rolls come in a variety of shapes and sizes as pepp with a twistpizza makers fashion them in their own special ways. Travel throughout the country and you will find long and short rolls, pizza-filled dough balls, puff pastries and twists all stuffed with pepperoni.

Just recently, Pizza Inn promoted its own version of a Pepperoni Twist throughout its entire chain. Made by wrapping hand-tossed Italian dough around a generous blend of pepperoni and melted Mozzarella, and topped off with a sprinkling of signature Romano and Parmesan magic dust, these creations have been a huge hit at Pizza Inns throughout the country.  As a promotional item, Pizza Inn offered its Twists at $5 for five with every medium or large pizza order.  Want to make your own Pizza Rolls?  Here’s a recipe we like:

  • Dried Italian seasoning
  • Grated Parmesan

Instructions:

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees F
  2. Separate the dough into pieces and flatten them slightly with your fingers.
  3. Place three to five pepperoni slices side-by-side, overlapping slightly, in the center of each dough piece. Cover each piece of pepperoni with a generous sprinkling of cheese.
  4. Fold or roll each piece of dough to secure the pepperoni and cheese inside. Roll crescents from the short side of the triangle. Position them on a lightly greased cookie sheet seam-side down, about 4 inches apart.
  5. Mist each roll with cooking spray or brush lightly with melted butter or an egg wash. Sprinkle dried Italian seasoning and grated Parmesan on top.
  6. Bake the pepperoni rolls until golden brown, about 12 to 15 minutes. Serve them with warm tomato or other sauce for dipping.
